Why Anthropic is Betting Big on AI Safety as a Growth Strategy

Context

Anthropic is one of the most intriguing players in the AI space, setting itself apart by prioritising safety and ethics over sheer speed in development.

Founded in 2021 by siblings Daniela and Dario Amodei – both former OpenAI executives – the company has rapidly grown from a small research team to a powerhouse with over 800 employees. 

Anthropic’s goal is ambitious: to develop AI systems that are not just powerful but also steerable, transparent, and aligned with human values. 

Investors have taken notice, too, with tech giants like Amazon and Google collectively pouring billions into the company.

However, its ascent was far from smooth, and its early days were marked by financial uncertainty, operational hurdles, and philosophical dilemmas about balancing safety with commercial viability.  

Real-Life Story

Unlike other AI firms fixated on first-mover advantage, Anthropic has built its reputation by championing “Constitutional AI,” an approach that embeds ethical guidelines into AI models from the outset.

This focus on responsible AI development has paid off – its latest chatbot, Claude, is widely regarded as a strong competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. 

Anthropic was born out of a fundamental disagreement about AI safety. Dario, a key researcher at OpenAI, became increasingly concerned that the organisation was moving too fast, prioritising market dominance over safety precautions.

Frustrated, he and a handful of colleagues left to form Anthropic, a company that would put safety first – even if it meant moving slower than the competition. However, breaking away from OpenAI meant starting from scratch, and the road ahead was anything but easy.  

Funding was a major challenge. In its early days, Anthropic struggled to attract conventional venture capital, as most investors sought immediate returns from AI breakthroughs rather than a long-term bet on safety-first development. 

The company’s first significant lifeline came from Sam Bankman-Fried’s cryptocurrency exchange, FTX, which invested over US$500m. When FTX collapsed in 2022, however, Anthropic found itself in financial limbo, scrambling to secure new backers.   

In the race to dominate AI, companies like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Microsoft wielded deep pockets and vast computational resources. 

Anthropic, on the other hand, had to fight for access to cutting-edge chips, top-tier talent, and crucial partnerships. Maintaining independence while securing funding became a tightrope walk of balancing investor expectations without compromising safety.  

Unlike its competitors, Anthropic refused to rush AI models to market without rigorous testing. This cautious approach set it apart but also raised questions: could an AI company afford to move deliberately in an industry where speed often dictated success? Would investors remain patient with a startup that refused to cut corners?  

Safety First: Selling a New Ethos of AI Development 

Anthropic’s breakthrough moment came when it refined its pitch to investors – not as a company that lagged behind in the AI race, but as the only player actively mitigating AI’s existential risks. Framing safety as a unique selling point, it attracted the attention of companies that needed AI they could trust.  

This strategy resonated particularly well with Amazon, which saw Anthropic’s safety-centric approach as an opportunity to differentiate its cloud AI services. 

In a landmark deal, Amazon committed up to $8bn in investment, securing Anthropic’s AI models for its AWS customers. Similarly, Google – recognising the growing demand for “responsible AI” – invested heavily and integrated Anthropic’s models into its cloud services. 

These strategic partnerships not only provided Anthropic with financial stability but also gave it the computing power to scale its research.  

From Underdog to Industry Leader

The influx of capital enabled Anthropic to refine its AI models and expand its safety research. It introduced a layered defence system, where AI models were trained using constitutional guidelines, continuously monitored for ethical alignment, and subjected to rigorous “red-teaming” or simulated adversarial attacks. This made its technology particularly appealing to enterprises wary of AI-related liabilities.  

By 2024, Anthropic’s valuation had skyrocketed to nearly $60bn, a remarkable leap from its previous $18bn. More importantly, it had carved a niche in the AI space, proving that a company could prioritise safety and still attract major investment. As AI regulation looms, Anthropic’s head start in compliance and ethical AI governance gives it a competitive edge, positioning it as a thought leader in responsible AI.  

Despite the success, Anthropic still faces significant hurdles. Regulators are scrutinising its ties with Amazon and Google, questioning whether these investments give the tech giants undue influence over AI safety decisions. Meanwhile, the AI race is heating up, with new entrants and established players pushing the boundaries of AI capabilities.  

PostScript: Anthropic’s challenge now is to scale without sacrificing its founding principles. Can it maintain its independence while relying on corporate investors? Will its slower, safety-first approach remain commercially viable in an industry driven by rapid innovation? These questions will define its future.  

But Anthropic’s journey is a testament to the fact that AI success doesn’t have to come at the cost of safety. While the AI world often rewards those who “move fast and break things,” Anthropic has made a compelling case that moving deliberately – while ensuring AI is robust, interpretable, and aligned with human values – can be just as lucrative.
